Tableware

Tableware collections explore the historic technique of agateware which was prominent in the UK in 17th & 18th century industrial ceramics, notably Josiah Wedgewood. I use a combination of coloured clays that I prepare myself with oxides and stains to my own recipes. I predominantly create the works using a porcelain type stoneware body, which I individually throw and turn, inside and out to accentuate the agate surfaces further. The colour combinations are inspired by those used for the bird vessels for example white, black and orange for the blackbird. The grey and pink bodies are created by recycling the clay turned from the bird vessels; grey from the blackbirds and crows and pinkish from the sparrows. Fresh colours and white are then added. The work is fired to Stoneware temperatures and typically glazed on the inside and polished on the outside.
